Teacher Exchange

United States

Program Length: 3-5 Years

About This Program

If you are a non-U.S. citizen with teaching experience, this program offers you a valuable opportunity to learn different methods of teaching while also bringing an important international perspective to young students. This program is designed for the exchange of different teaching methodologies with other teachers, and the opportunity to teach a classroom of American children much more than basic education. The program provides a rare chance to share your country’s culture and heritage, exposing American students to the ideas of international inclusion and tolerance, and enabling them to think with a greater world perspective.

Teaching is a special profession. It gives you unlimited potential to influence and impact young lives. Alliance Abroad Group helps teachers broaden the world view of today’s American youth through matching excellent and inspired teaching professionals with accredited host schools across the U.S. We carefully check each school to ensure that they are not only accredited institutions, but that they are in full compliance with Department of State regulations. This means you can focus on teaching while we focus on finding the right fit for the next step in your educational career.

What will I be doing?

In addition to teaching, you will be facilitating cross cultural exchange between your U.S. classroom and your home country. Once a year you will organize a day or activity that highlights your culture and allows for your U.S. students to have a dialogue (through virtual exchange or other means) with students in your home country. The Teacher Exchange Program enables international educators to utilize their knowledge to help build the critical and analytical skills of our youth, and to personally showcase the value of cultural exchange.

You will be teaching full-time within the American educational school system, working directly with young students, exchanging teaching methodologies with other teachers, and reporting to your supervisor-teacher and principal.

I thank Alliance Abroad for making my dream come true.

- Kamala Kilari

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I bring my family?

Yes. Eligible dependents include spouses and unmarried children under the age of 21. You must apply with AAG and provide evidence you are able to financially support all dependents.

Do I have to be a certified teacher?

It depends on the school, but most schools require teachers to be certified. Prior to arrival you must initiate the certification process for the U.S. state in which you will teach, and after arrival you must continue with the certification process until you have achieved full certification. We will help to make sure you understand what is required!

How much will I be earning?

Salary is based on level of education, experience, and placement location. J-1 teachers are paid on the same salary scale as U.S. teachers. Salary in the U.S. is subject to federal, state, and local income taxes and withholdings.

Do I check-in monthly with you?

Yes. Because your safety is our primary concern, you will be required to check-in with us every month while you are abroad. But we are also here whenever you need us! We provide you with 24/7 support from our dedicated team of staff.

What is the host school’s role?

It’s an honor and a privilege for schools to participate in the program. They will ensure you teach and have opportunities for professional development alongside seasoned educators and gain additional experience to build upon your current teaching methods.

How long does each program last?

This varies depending on the type of visa, and some programs allow for extensions. We can help you identify the best type of visa for your hiring needs as well as bring you the best candidates.

America is so big - where will I be working?

We have placements available with companies across the United States. We will work with you to identify the types of opportunities and locations that fit your interests. We will ensure you know exactly where you will be living and working before you arrive.

Who will help me find housing?

You will arrange for housing, and we are happy to provide you with housing recommendations. We inspect our recommended housing options to ensure the housing is affordable, safe, and close to your host school. Housing arrangements must be in place before arriving to the U.S.

Both your visa sponsor and employer must have your most current address and telephone contact information at all times while you are on the program.
